PLIGHT OF FARMERS
NEED OF STATE HELP REPRESENTATIONS BY BOARD It is understood that the Dairy Produce Board has urged on the Government the need for immediate assistance to the dairy farmer. After considering the report of the Dairy Commission members of the board take the view that this is designed rather as a longrange plan to help the industry than as suggesting steps to aid the individual supplier. The board believes that questions of reorganising the industry and changing the administration are not as urgent as that of helping farmers individually. It is recognised that present prices are unpayable and there is little prospect of appreciable improvement. The present board believes that the establishment of a Government-con-trolled board and of a supreme export council will not be acceptable to the industry. It is possible that these matters will be the subject of early legislation and the board has arranged for meetings of dairy farmers within the various wards represented on the board.
