DEATH OF MR. J. E. BRIEN NOTABLE RACING SUCCESSES

Mr. .T. E. Brien, whoso death was announced from Sydney this week, had much success since, about 27 years ago, ho sot out to train his own horses' for the rich events of the Australian tnrf. With Malt King he downed Prince Foote in tho Caujfiold Guineas, and won leading standard weight-for-ago races. Then almost immediately followed Beragoon, for whom he paid the breeder, Mr. George Lee, 700 guineas, when the Multiform colt was .a yearling. Beragoon was a great two-year-old, and took both Derbies. But the Melbourne Cup was beyond him, finishing fifth to the runaway Posinatus. Later Pantheon did a little" better, runnipg third. As a breeder Mr. Brien figured largely. When Malt King retired from the turf he set him up at the Kingsfield Stud, in the Hunter Valley, New South' Wales. After a season or two tie Maltster horse was joined by Berag6on. The Kingsfield studmaster gave each horse a great opportunity, and on one occasion imported from Mr. J. B. Joel's Childwickbury Stud six highly-bred two and three-year-old fillies. Most of them became successful matrons, and although neither of his horses topped the winning sires' list thev begat a considerable number of winners. When in England a few years ago Mr. Brien acquired Rossendale, and later had the satisfaction -of winning the Breeders' Plate, Maribyrnong Plate, both Derbies, and the Bond Cup. with Rampion, whoso lirother, the Rossendale colt Ramulus, also won the Breeders' Plate. Pantheon proved a fine investment as a racehorse. In later years Mr. Brien shared his interests on the turf and at Kingsfield with his son Cecil.
