AUCKLAND SOCIETY'S YEAR PROFIT SLIGHTLY HIGHER Tho accounts of the United Permanent. Building and Investment Society of Auckland for the year ended September 30 disclose a net profit of £6164, as against £6046 earned in tho previous year. The year's dividend is being maintained at 5 per cent. With £lOl2 brought into tho accounts there is £7l/6 available. An interim dividend of 2£ per cent absorbed £2460, and the directors now .propose a final dividend of a similar amount and to transfer £1250 to reserve, leaving £IOO6 to be carried forward. The appropriation to reserve will increase that fund to £19,250. Reference is made in the report to the loss tho company suffered by the death of Mr. Robert Burns, a member of tho board of directors for many yehrs, and late chairman. The retiring directors; Messrs. A. M. Howden and W. jN. Leatham, are offering themselves for re-election. Paid-up capital remains practically tho same at £98,416, whilo deposits, on which interest has been paid, are a shade higher at £30,176. The liability to the bank at £1338 compares with £306 a year ago.

NEW SEASON'S GOOSEBERRIES HEAVY VEGETABLE SUPPLIES Only a few small parcels of strawberries are as yet coming to hand at the City Markets, but the first of the new season's gooseberries were offered yesterday, and sold at 13s 3d a case. Apples continued to sell at low rates and hothouse tomatoes dropped in value. There was a poor demand for pears. Ripe bananas and good quality New Zealand grapefruit jrere in short supply. The market was heavily supplied with onions, cabbage, rhubarb and lettuce, while there \*ere also good supplies of cauliflower, asparagus, beans, green peas, carrots, parsnips and beet.
