NEED OF THE NORTH
WORK ON MAIN ROAD WAIPAPAKAURI NORTHWARD PROPOSAL TO MINISTER [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] KAITAIA. Friday f.n reply to representations made by the Kaitaia Chamber of Commerce and others in the/district, Mr. H. M. Rushworth, M.P., interviewed the Minister of Public Works, impressing on him the urgent need for the continuance of the work on the > main road north from Waipapakauri, but the reply received from the Minister stated that he could not see his way clear to allow the work to proceed further at present. When discussing the Minister's reply at the Kaitaia Chamber of Commerce meeting last night, members were unanimous that further representations should be made to the Minister, not only as the road served a large area of / rapidly-developing land, but also there were a number of unemployed in the district who could be engaged on the work. It was decided that a deputation should wait on the Mangonui County Council to urge that the Minister of Public Works be approached with the proposal that the council find £IOO, the department to subsidise this amount to the extent of £3 for £l, and that the work should be done by unemployed labour, the Unemployment Board to pay for the labour and the money from the council and department to be used for materials only Petitions were being circulated in the district urging on the Minister to push forward with the work.
