WAITEMATA COUNTY
RELIEF WORKERS DECREASE A steady decrease in the number of relief workers employed in the Waitemata county was reported at yesterday's meeting of the County Council by the engineer. Mr. L. F. Faram. As jobs were completed it was not intended to re-engage the men for any but urgent works. The work at present being done was of a useful nature and the county would no doubt be saved a considerable amount on construction works in the future. At present 853 men were employed on roads and 32 on farms. The road to Cornwallis Beach was being metalled, the engineer reported, and should be ready in about six weeks. The clerk, Mr. C. A. Cawkwell. stated that rates collected during September totalled £5676. Building permits amounting to £2307 were issued during the month.
