HOPE OF SETTLEMENT

CONFERENCE OF PARTIES ARRANGEMENTS FOR TO-DAY (Received October 17, 11.55 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 17 The decision of the tramwaymen to strike means that the Duke of Gloucester will arrive to-morrow to find the city affected by industrial strife. The result of the strike to-morrow should not be serious, because the tramway services are usually suspended on the occasion of great processions. People will be able to reach the route of the Royal procession by train and emergency buses. The tramwaymen are to meet again on Friday morning. This evening the Trades Hall Disputes Committee is conferring with the Tramway Board. Hopes are entertained of a settlement.
