PHILISTINES' CLUB
The entertainment provided at the Philistines' Club social, held in the Amateur Operatic Society's hall on Saturday evening wA's unique, in as much as the items were practically all composed or written by New Zealanders. The chairman was Mrs. Nello Porter, who was entirely responsible for the enjoyable programme. The gathering included a very large number of members and visitors, also members of the Dunedin Club. The programme opened with an amusing item entitled "A Sermon on the Philistine" with topical verses written by Mr. Wilfred Wright and company. Two songs entitled "Sea Love" (music by Mrs. Mary Brett Neil and words by an English poetress, Charlotte Men) 'and "Autumn Morning at Cambridge" (music by Mrs. Mary Brett Neil and words by Frances Cornford) were sung by Mrs. Towsev. Two songs by G. C. Lyttelton were sung bv Miss Verner Wishart and others written by Miss Amy Hansard were also sung by the writer herself. Flute duets composed by Mr. W. Henderson were played by Mr. Henderson and Mr. Cater. Long and short poi dances were provided by Miss Edith Coughlin and original humour by Mr. Dan Flood. A violin solo was also played by Mr. Ronald Muston. In a play entitled "The Amateur Wife," written by Mrs. Nello Porter, the characters were taken by Mrs. Jock Allen, Miss Edna Herrick, Miss Edna Craig, Mr. H. Dutton,_ Mr. Norton Hammond and Mr. Wilfred Wright. The accompaniments were played by Mrs. Prime and Miss Rose Kennedy. Among those present were:—Mrs. B. E. Bird (Nelson), Mrs. Tollerton, Mrs. J.
