DR. BEDFORD'S DEATH
MANY YEARS IN AUCKLAND WELL-KNOWN PRACTITIONER WORK AT THE HOSPITAL The death occurred yesterday of Dr. Robert Bedford, aged 8$!, of 5 Cornwall Park Avenue, Epsom. Born 011 the border of Cornwall and Devonshire, Dr. Bedford received his education at Truro Grammar School and University College, London. After obtaining his medical degrees in 1873 Dr. Bedford became a resident physician in the Albert Hospital, Plymouth, later entering the Admiralty medical service. In 3897 he came to New Zealand, and, after practising at Kaikoura and Mercury Bay, he established a practice in Ponsonby. He later removed to Mount Eden Road, where he lived until about three years ago. For many years
]jj was medical attendant to city friendly societies. For 12 years he filled the position of ophthalmic surgeon at the Auckland Hospital. In his hospital work he was associated with such oldtime practitioners as the late Dr. Hope Lewis, Dr. McKellar, Dr. Osborne Knight and Dr. Scott. The educational side of hospital work was always one of his hobbies, and he was for a long period chairman of the board of examiners of nurses. Dr. Bedford is survived by his wife, and three sons, Messrs. R. H. Bedford, of the United States, A. H. Bedford and F. H. Bedford, of Auckland. There are four grandchildren.
