NOTES ON THE RACING

VICTORY FOR GAY SHEIK HURDLES TO FULL MEASURE MUNGACRE DEFEATS SCOTLAND BY ARCHER The four runners in the Juvenile Handicap finished in the order in whiph they were backed, the hot favourite Gay Sheik winning very easily. Gay Sheik and Golden Princess were smartest to begin and Gay Sheik led early to be joined at the top hy Ruapai, with Galilee and Golden Princess together next. Rounding the turn Ruapai ran wide and Galilee went through tho opening, only to run about in the straight and allow Gay Sheik to win untroubled by two and a-half lengths. Golden Princess was five lengths away third, and Ruapai was fourth some lengths away Gay Sheik was not pushed at any stage and won handily. He is a fine colt who is not the least concerned after racing and will disappoint if he fails to do really well. Galilee is a nice filly, moulded on very symmetrical lines, and all she needs is a little more experience. She haß a good turn of speed but ran very "green." Golden Princesß and Ruapai are both small and did. not impress. Tins dashing Val Watch was an each-way favourite for the Handicap Hurdles but she crashed heavily when in the lead at the second fence, levelling tho three inside panels completely tp the ground. Lapstone was then left in command from Full Measure, who had run through ahead of Glenade and La Femtne Noire. Lapstone swerved right across the field at the third fence and along the back Glenade was in command from Full Measure, Cordon and Chromadyne, with Mia Stella and Jjuminary moving up. Full Measure was in the lead at the last fence, which was down, and went on to win comfortably by threeparts of a length from Glenade, who defeated Luminary by two lengths. Cordon was fourth followed by La Femme Noiro, Mia Stella and Chromadyne. An Overdue Victory It was Full Measure's first race over hurdles for some considerable tim.e but he jumped cleanly and won well. He was off tho scene for a long period as the result of an injury and this was hin first win for over two yours. Full Measure appeared a trifle sore after the race. Glenade was one of the outsiders of tho field and returned a fine dividend for a jilace. Chromadyne shaped creditably in his first attempt as a hurdler and Luminary ran his best race for some time Val Watch injured Jicr nose when she fell and came in bleeding freely. The three-year-old Sporting Blood was a pronounced favourite for the Hack Cup Handicap but, after getting squeezed back near the five furlongs post, he could only finish third. Sporting Blood, Bonny Gay, Tondaleyo and Valpai were quickly prominent, and when tho field had settled down Tondaleyo and Valpai were together in tho lead from Emancipation and Bonny Gay, with Sporting Blood next. Tondaleyo and Valpai were still the leaders entering the straight olosely pursued by Bopny Gay and Fiist Lap, with Sporting Blood coming fast. In a great race home Bonny Gay won by a head from First Lap, who defeated Sporting Blood by a neck. Emancipation was a fair fourth, succeeded by Valpai, Don't Lap, Lagoon and Master Musk. Sporting Blood looked like a good thing beaten, as in addition to losing his position at the five furlongs ho had to ';o through tho bunch in the straight and appeared to be a trifle squeezed for mv:i near tho end, where ho was on the <• side of Bonny Gay. The winner registered a smooth performance, and so did Fir > who paid a good price for second. Valpai and Tondaleyo both stopped quickly at tho end. Favourites Prominent The favourites Tray Bit and Queen Nona finished first and third in tho Trial Handicap. Dancing Lady, Winlona, Modern Maid and Qlueen Nona were prominent early, Dancing Lady leading into the straight from Modern Maid, Queen Nona and Tray Bit, who was wide out. Once in line for the post Tray Bit soon asserted his superiority and won going away by two lengths from Modern Maid. Queen Nona wan a head away third with Silver Jubilee finishing, fast in fourth position. • Next to cross tho lino wero Kilberis and Dancing Lady. It was only Tray Bit's second raca and he won v.-ell. He did not jump out very smartly but got a nice run through along the back and was ifp handy at the turn, where ho wont out wide, being outside three horses. Modern Maiji made a creditable showing and paid a good price for second. Queen Nona, who was galloped on, ran . her usual honest raco, and Silver Jubilee did remarkably well in his first public outing. Ordered behind tho field at the start, he was a long way back early but was flying over everything at the finish. Silver Jubilee is a half-brother, by Romeo, to Barometnr. Outsider of the field of four, Baroscope led practically from end to end to score an overduo victory in tho Taumarunui Cup. Havering" showed out first, but Baroscope immediately toolc up the running, with Mungatoon on his girths and Gainsfid and Havering together next. So thejr raced round the home turn. Barr*icope staying on to win by three-parts of a length from Mungatoon. Gainsfid was half a head away third, with Havering a couplg of lengths back last. Previous Win Repeated It was Baroscope's second successive win in the race, and hio first for nearly twelve months. Tho easy track suited Baroscope, who is coming right back to his best. Mungatoon was always the winner's closest attendant and challenged gamely at the finish without being able to make an impression. Gainsfid made a croditable showing, and so did Havering, " although ho failed to show any real brilliance when the pressure was applied. The favourite, Golden England, raced below form in the Steeplechase Handicap and was well beaten. En Tour led over the first fencij and shortly afterwards Sir Pathfinder took up the running with Golden England and St. Warrigal prominent. With a round to qo Si? Pathfinder tired quickly, Golden England and St. Warrigal going to the front at the double tho last time, where Golclen England jumped badly and nearly fell. St. Warrigal then drew out slightly and along the back he led from Golden England and Mia Stella, who were together, with. Ruby Meteor and Lucess handy. Ruby Meteor joined St. Warrigal in the lead near the home turn and, drawing away in the straight,, beat him by three-farts of a length. Mia Stella was a length and a-half away third with En Tour a fair fourth. Then followed Golden England and Lucess. Sir Pathfinder was pulled up near tho finish. Although she was having her first raco since winning the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie in 1931, Rippling Waters was made an eaoh-way favourite for tho Flying Handicap, and she duly won. Rippling Waters gave a lot of trouble at the post but she. got away well, being second out behind King Mestor. Rippling Waters ran to tho front quickly and led into the straight from King Mest.or, Greek Gold, Day Wind and Prolyxo. Rippling Waters stayed on in the run home to score by three-parts of a length from Gre.ek Gold and Prolyxo, who dead-heated for second. Day Wind was fourth followed by King Mestor and Master Norval, Exciting Hack Finish Rippling Waters' long absence from racing was due to an injury she received when running in the paddock shortly after she won us a two-year-old. She retains her speed and should win more races, although she will have to settle down at the barrier. Greek Gold and Prolyxo both ran fair races, the latter finishing on well. Day Wind made an improved showing mid should do still better in tho noar future. In spite of tho fact that lie drew No. 15 at the barrier Scotland was favourite on both machines for tho Hack Handicap and he made a determined bid for victory only to go under narrowly. The inside horses Killadar, Gay "Egypt and Glenromney were smnrtest to begin, but Bellkyrian. from No. 17, with a great dash of brilliancy, was in front along the back from Glenromney. Killadar. Scotland, Mungacre and Gay Egypt. Bellkyrian was clear at the top and led into the straight just ahead of Scotland, with Glenromney, Mungacre, Killadar and Prince Acre next. In a great race homo Mungacre got up on tho outside to win by half a head from Scotland, who beat Bellkyrian by a nock. Prince Acre was a couple of longths away fourth, succeeded by F.nci, Ballymoney and Killadar. The placed horses bent the others decisively. Mungacre finished splendidly ar.d just outstayed Scotland and Bellkyrian, who tired in the last little bit after making big efforts early to get positions after beginning from near the outside of the field. Princo Aero wan running on and so was Engi. RACING FIXTURES October I—Taumarunui Racing Club (at Paeroa). October 4, fi—Duncdin Jockey Club. t October 5. 6—Otnl<i Maori Racing Club.
