SAMPAN DETAINED
VESSEL LATER RELEASED [THURSDAY ISLAND INQUIRY (Received September 21, 6.35 p.m.) BYDNEY, Sept. 21 A message from Thursday Island states that a Japanese sampan landed four me,n last night at Booby Island, a lonely* lighthouse station 20 miles west of Thursday Island, to inquire about lights. The vessel was intercepted by Commonwealth officials and taken to Thursday Island. The sampan was driven by a semi-Diesel engine and had a cA"* w of 20. The customs authorities at Canberra later announced! that the sampan has been released. The vessel s papers showed that it was not the one which recently called at .Possession Island and removed gold ore.
