BABY DROWNED
FOOTBRIDGE TRAGEDY COLLAPSE OF RAILING FALLS FROM MOTHER'S ARM [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] INVERCARGILL. Friday A tragic accident, involving a mother's loss of her baby boy, occurred this afternoon. The little victim was Alfred Vincent Tull, of St. Kilda, only four weeks old, and he was drowned in the Hollvburn Stream, seven miles from Tuatapere. Mrs. Tull, who has been spending a holiday at Te Wae Wae, was crossing the stream by means of a footbridge and was carrying her baby on her arm. Suddenly she slipped and to save herself and her child from falling into tho water below she grasped the wooden handrail of the bridge. The railing gave way and the baby was precipitated into the stream, being carried down by the current. Airs. Tull ran downstream and entered the water. She succeeded in recovering the baby, but it showpd no signs of life. Dr. Dodds and Constable Skipworth were summoned and artificial respiration was applied without success.
