GOLDEN WEDDING
The golden weeding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. George Powell, of Taupiri, will be celebrated to-morrow. A native of South Ireland, Mr. Powell came to New Zealand in the Waitara aifd attained his 80th' birthday last February. He was employed as carpenter by the Waikato Land Company. Mrs. Powell came to this country 69 years ago last March with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Carter, in the ship Bombay. These settlers were the pioneers in the Bombay district, giving the name of the ship to their new home. Mr. and Mrs. Powell were married in St. Peter's Church, Bombay, by the Rev. P. S. Smallfield, at that time vicar of that parish. They took up their residence at Gordonton, then known as "Hukanui," later removing to Taupiri, where they have lived ever since, Mr. Powell's farm lying on the Orini Road. There were six children of the marriage, Messrs. Harrv, William, George, ],eslie and TSrnest Powell and Mrs. W. Moore of Taupiri, Mr. Powell has taken a keen interest in various activities in the district. being for many years a member of the school committee, and various sports bodies, and taking a keen interest in the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Show, of which, in spite of his eighty years, he is still a steward.
