REBATE ON RATES
HOBSON COUNTY REQUEST
[by telegraph—own correspondent] DARGAVILLE, Friday
The Hobson County Council, on the motion of Mr. E. G. Appleton, decided at its last meeting to make representations to the Government in regard to the rebate on rates. " This council should take a firm attitude in asking that the Government grant a rebate on rates collected, as was done a couple of years ago," said Mr. Appleton. The time should be opportune, said the chairman, Mr. V. Trounson, for, when approached previously, Mr. Coates had said it could not be considered until conditions improved. Mr. Carpenter moved that the council make a request to the Government to amend the legislation, so that a ratepayer should not be debarred from offering his services as a candidate at the elections next May by the fact that he was in arrears with his rates. The chairman pointed out that ratepayers in arrears could not vote. The motion was adopted.
