WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Waikato Branches. —A conference of delegates representing the Waikato branches of the Women's Institute was held in Hamilton on Wednesday. Mrs. E. Kelso, of Ohau, Dominion organising secretory, and ' Miss A. Kane, of Wellington, a member of the Dominion Council, were welcomed. /The conference discussed Tarious aspects of the institute's work and organisation. Glen Massey.—The "Taupiri Trio" was responsible for the Afternoon's entertainment. They gave demonstrations of making papier mache dolls, silver paper pictures, yool toys made from sheepskins, woollen rugs made from clippings of sheepskins, raffia work and hairpin work. During the social half hour they rendered songs and recitations. Hillcrest. —The competition was for three of biscuits, and the roll call—cure' for chilblains and chapped hands—brought useful hints. Mangaokewa.—A delightful lecture on Mendelssohn was given by Mrs. Dickenson. Mrs. Powdrill demonstrated wool wOrk. The roll call was "My favourite song in the institute's song book and why I like it." Ngaruawahia. An interesting demonstration of fancy stitches in knitting by Mrs. MoCtirdy was enjoyed. Ratzlan.—The delegate renorted on the Dominion conference. The competition was for a jar of marmalade and the roll call, "My net extravagance."- Songs -by Mrs. Painter were enjoyed. Hpringdale.—Co-operation on behalf of a borough rest room in Te Aroha was talced'for and promised. A demonstration wns given of fancy work, etc., on a sewing ntachine. fiood business was done at a sales table. - Te Hoe.—Activities for the. month included % progressive five hundred evening in aid of institute funds. A reading, "Strange marriage customs in other lands," was enjoyed. A competition for the "prettiest coat hanger" produced many entries. The roll call was " A question I would like answered." Te Uku.—The Raglan delegate was present and reported on the Dominion conference. The competitions were for » bowl of daffodils, a handkerchief made from a salt bag, shortbread and Maori names. A piresentation was made to a member who is. leaving the district. TO® sales table did good business.
