CATTLE WANTED
GREAT SALE OF STORES RECORD WELLSFORD YARDING EXCELLENT PRICES OBTAINED SATISFACTION OF FARMERS [HY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WARKWORTH, Thursday Altogether 1562 head of cattle were yarded at a special sale of store cattle hold at Wellsford to-day, the offering being a record for the province for many years. All but 50 head were sold. The scene was reminiscent of the boom period, buyers bidding keenly at figures in advance of the prices offered for several years. The largs attendance of farmers and graziers evinced keen appreciation of the excellent values obtained, prices generally being substantially in advance of vendors' reserves. It is estimated that over £OSOO will bo distributed as a result of the sale, and this will offset to some extent the low prices ruling for butter-fat. It was anticipated that the general shortage of feed would prevent any considerable advance in values, but the unusual activity of southern buyers entirely altered conditions. Scenes of great activity were witnessed at the Wellsford station this afternoon and evening. At two o'clock, before the sale was half over, the dipping of stock to go south was commenced ..
About 200 head were despatched by train at 4 p.m. for stations f south of Auckland, and good moonlight enabled trucking to bo carried on during the evening. Another special train left at 9.15 for Te Kauwhata, where it will arrive at five o'clock in the morning, only 15 hours after the cattle had passed under the hammer at Wellsford. By noon to-morrow over 800 cattle will have left Wellsford for the south. Some 300 head will leave at daybreak in one mob by the West Coast Road to Brigham's Creek and through Auckland to Runciman. The mob will be the largest seen in the district for some years. Another mob is being shipped by scow from Puhoi to one of the islands in the Hauraki Gulf.
