BEEF EXPORTS DECLINE EFFECT OF THE EMBARGO EXPANSION IN PORK TRADE The embargo on the export of beef to Great Britain is reflected in the returns of shipments of meat for the 11 months of the season ended August 31. During August no boneless beef was shipped to Great Britain and only 8058 quarters of frozen beef. The total amount of frozen beef shipped from New Zealand between October 1, 1933, and August 31, 1934, was 400,135 quarters, compared with 308,365 quarters in the same period of 1932-33, and boneless beef, 220,383 bags, against 203,228 bags. Prior to the restriction, the exports in the current season showed a far greater advanco over last season. In chilled beef, 18,528 quarters have been sent overseas this season, against 994 quarters in the previous season. The expansion in the pork trade is increasingly evident, shipments to date this season being 424,470 carcases, against 255,585 carcases last season. Lamb and mutton figures show reductions, the shipments of lamb being 8,374,985 carcases, against 8,697,291. carcases last season, and mutton, 1.622,996 carcases and 1,983,239 carcases respectively. In every class of meat, practically the entire shipments were to Great Britain. Stocks In Store There has been a partial lifting of the embargo in tho case of quarter beef and stocks are lower than last year. Stocks of boneless beef are more than three times as high as last year. The total stocks in store at the end of August, compared with the previous year's stocks, were as follows:—Beef, 99,208 (150,648); wethers, 71,235 (89,575); ewes, 133,579 (122,260); lambs, 284,672 (193,730); porkers, 38,938 (62,231); baconers, 4161 (3282); boneless beef, 185,946 (54,100); sundries, 58,779 (98,233). Stocks in vessels not departed from New Zealand on August- 31 were: — Beef, 9908 ( —); wethers, 32,819 (14,841); ewes, 35,240 (14,624); lambs, 162,348 (34,352); porkers, 8961 (4121); baconers, 2649 (1141). Shipments of meat from Australia and South America to the United Kingdom during August were as follows: — Australia: Carcases mutton, 50,513; carcases lamb, 52,514; quarters beef (frozen), 90,162. South America: Carcases mutton, 24,902; carcases lamb, 184,911; quarters beef (frozen), 1118; chilled, 416.330.
