NAVIGATION AIDS
BOARD AND CHAMBER REPLY TO CRITICISM Correspondence between the Auckland Chamber of Commerce and the Auckland Harbour Board concerning navigation aids in the Hauraki Gulf was referred to at yesterday's meeting of the council of the chamber. "There was no intention by this council of being discourteous or interfering in urging upon the Harbour Board the necessity for navigation safeguards in the gulf," said the president, Mr. A. G. Lunn. "At the last meeting of the Harbour Board several members —following a confession by the superintendent-secretary that he had been considerably annoyed at the chamber's last letter —made some entirely uncalled-for allegations of cheekiness on the part of the chamber. It is quite evident some of the officials and members of the board do not realise that the Auckland Chamber of Commerce represents practically the whole of the payers of dues on shipping, and on cargo, and that its members, as a body, are vitally interested in all matters concerning safeguards of vessels and their cargoes entering and leaving this port." After discussion, it was decided to take no further action, Mr. W. B. Darlow, the board's member on the council of the chamber, remarking that the matter should be dropped.
