CUNARD LINER
LAUNCHING PROBLEM CHECK ON THE SPEED GREAT WEIGHT OF VESSEL CEREMONY ON WEDNESDAY By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received September 19, 10.5 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 19 The new Cunard liner will take four minutes to slide down the slipways when she is launched on the Clyde on September 26. Experts have decided that the enormous weight of the vessel (40,000 tons) necessitates the slowing down of the launching speed. This will be achieved by means of drag-chains weighing 2350 tons. It is understood that the Cunarder and the new French vessel Normandie will not be business rivals, although they will fight fwr the Atlantic blue riband. The two companies have concluded an agreement under which the sailings of the two vessels will be so arranged that when one is crossing the Atlantio from east to west the other will be steaming from west to east.
