WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Aratoro. —The delegate gave an interesting account at a recent meeting of the Dominion conference. A competition was for knitted berets. Gordonton.—To celebrate the fourth birthday, an afternoon and an evening party were held, about 200 people being present The programmes consisted of songs, competitions and two one-act plays. At the monthly meeting a lecture on phrenology was given by Mr. Treloar, of Hamilton. Motumaoho.—Miss Fagan's demonstration of tatting was most interesting. The library continues to be a source of interest to members and the sales table is always popular. Matangi.—There was a record attendance at the fourth birthday party, which included visitors from sister institutes. The programme opened with community singing, after which items were given by Eureka members, also a sketch, "The Bride." The Motumaoho pierette troupe proved very popular in individual and troupe items. After supper dancing was enjoyed. Maungatautiri.—An interesting demonstration was given by Mr. Ennis, of Morrinsville, of woolcraft, darning, etc., done on a sewing machine. Six ladies took part in a debate, "Are we better off than our grandmothers were." The meeting by a large majority decided in favour of the negative. Excellent entries were received in the competition, "Covered Coat Hangers" and a "Posy of Spring Flowers." A member who is leaving the district was presented with a bedroom clonk and the winning posy of flowers. Orini. —An interesting and detailed report of the Dominion conference was given bv the delegate. It was decided to form a gardening circle. A cake competition was won by Mrs. Houghton.

Te Aroha. —Demonstrations of quiltmaking, upholstering an armchair and making iin foil pictures were given. The president reported on the conference.

Te Pahu.—lt was decided to plant trees in the hall grounds on behalf of the members and committee. The competitions were foj>Jeeland poppies and knitted scarf. A small presentation was mado to a member who is leaving the district.

Waerenga.—The delegate reported on the Dominion conference. An amusing competition was for "winding a skein of wool." The points prize for date scones was awarded to Mrs. Keith.
