CARD AFTERNOON
FUNCTION AT DEVONPORT One of the largest and most successful card afternoons yet held on the North Shore was that organised »by Mrs. J. W. Lowe and held at the Devonport parish hall yesterday. The proceeds, which amounted to £l9 10s, are in aid of the Ladies' Guild of the Holy Trinity Church. Assisting Mrs. Lowe as hostesses were the president of the Ladies' Guild, Mrs. C. H. Wheeler, Mrs. F. Wilson and Mrs. Horace Scott. The hall was draped with flags and the stage was transformed into a drawing room for those who did not care to play cards. Bowls of daffodils, shrubs and pot plants wore used with pleasing effect.
A bouquet of pink and mauve flowers was presented to Mrs. Wheeler, and in doing so, Mrs. Lowe asked those present for their co-operation and loyal support in the future. In the absence of the Rev. H. V. Salmon, vicar of the parish, the R£v. H. B. Wingfield, a former vicar in Devonport, addressed the gathering during the tea interval. There was a number of players present from Auckland and North Shore and city suburbs. The prizds, which were donated by Mrs. J. W. Lowe, Mrs. W. C. Beaumont and Mrs. Horace Scott, were won by the following ladies:—Mrs. Pilkington (highest number, bridge prize), Mrs. Cherret (hidden number, bridge prize), Mrs. Wriglev (consolation bridge prize). Miss Ina Wight (mah jongg), Mrs. Lyons (five hundred prize). The following ladies assisted with the arrangements:—Card committee: Mrs. Bullimore, Miss Bongard, Miss Wight and Miss Blair Mason. tee: Mrs. T. Palmer, Mrs. W. C. Beaumont and Mrs. A. T. Griffiths. Tea committee: Mrs. G. Carter and airs. Blandford (joint conveners), who were assisted by Mrs. Bennett, Mrs. Pike, Mrs. T. Palmer, Mrs. Sandford, Mrs. B. Schmidt, Mrs. Carl Prime, Misa Ina Wight, Miss Marjorie Mason, Miss Nora Mason, Miss Gwen Williams, Miss Joyce Gooding and Miss Effie Wilson. • The hostesses at the various tables were as follows: —Mrs. A.
