OUR NATIONAL FLOWER

LET'S TAKE A VOTE The question of deciding upon a national flower for New Zealand is once more receiving a good deal of / attention, and a vote Is to be taken this week among \> visitors to the Horticultural Society*! spring show. A similar ballot was taken in Wellington recently, and the voting was in favour of the following five flowers, in the order given: Kowhai, pohutukawa, manuka, clematis and It seems rather strange that both pohutukawa and rata should appear in the same list, for they similar in form that one could hardly be distinguished from the other in a sketch. The rata is lighter in colour than the pohutukawa, with a more vivid scarlet tinge, but that would not show In a photo or sketch. The claims of each of the four distinctive flowers are strong, and it would be very interesting to test the opinion of our readers on this matter.
