ACTRESS' HONEYMOON

SYBIL THORNDIKE'S "SECRET* SPEECH IN WELSH TONGUE Dame Sybil Thorndike surprised and pleased a crowd of 10,000 people who gave her a tumultuous welcome at the annual carnival at Portmadoc, Caernarvonshire recently, by breaking into the Welsh language when delivering a speech in crowning the Carnival Queen, Miss Katie Glandon Owen. Dame Sybil, apologising for the absence of her husband, Mr. Lewis Casson, said he, like every proper man, was earning his living while his wife was having a holiday. She and her husband have a residence at Portmadoc, and Dame Sybil said she had happy memories of Portmadoc as the place where she spent her honeymoon. The famous actress said she would not say when, or state the year of the honeymoon, as she had so often to represent herself as a young lady of 18. (Laughter.) She and her husband loved Wales, and would spend much of thtfir time there, and as she wanted to belong to the life of Wales she was now busy picking up the Welsh language. (Cheers.) Turning to the eight " queens," who were present, Dame Sybil said she also had been a queen on the stage —Queen of Henry V. and Henry VIII. (Laughter.)

Reference books reveal what Dame Sybil declined to disclose about her honeymoon. These state that she was married in 1908.
