FAST DISPLAY

RICHMOND'S EARLY LEAD. S In a fast display in which the. handling was remarkably good under rho condition's Richmond proved too strong all round for Ponsonby which, nevertheless, played a good game. Richmond went into the lead early and at one stage was leading bill! point to 0. This lead proved valuable as the game progressed and. due to th-j advantage, Richmond was able to take the honours. There were some fine tries Bcored by both teams, several players handling the ball on each occasion in reTerse passing movements. The try scored by Huts was probably the best of the match. From their own half and through a poor kick, the Ponsonby hacks caught the opposition out of position and after tho ball had travelled through the line Hutt, anticipating cleverly, came up . on the inside and finished off the movement with a try between tlie posts. Tho all-round play of Richmond as a team 'was better than that of Ponsonby, •which was not so consistent in itsi combination. Richmond was penalised several times for "shepherding," but.it _was obvious on some occasions that the incidents wero purely accidental. Cooke again played ■well at fullback for the winners, while Fletcher was the most impressive of the threequarter line. The latter is fulfilling the promise he showed when first playing fpr Richmond in the later part of the seaEon. The conditions suited J. Satherley. who played well and scored two nice tries. Prentice was eound. and Powell played his usual cood game behind scrum except for a tendency to attempt too much alone. C. Satherley. Telford and Lawless were the best forwards. Lewis, a young player, filled the fallback position for Ponsonby with credit, while an outstanding gam 9 was played by Whorsky on the wing. His good handling nnd determined running were features of his play! Kav played well at centre, but th 3 best hack was Iviley, who was frecnently conspicuous for good rlajr. One fault was his" tendency to run across the field instead of straightening up liis back , line on attack. In tha absence of Halloran Rush played a good game at halfback. Hutt was easily the outstanding forward and he received good support from Brown. Blood and Davis. , , njFor Richmond, which lea at half-time by 1G points to 5. tries were scored by C. Satherley, Prentice, J. Satherley (2). and Telford. C. Satherley converted two tries and Fletcher one. Hutt, Rush and Whorsky scored trie3.for Popsonby,. Jonea converting two. Mr. S. Billman was referee.
