TEMPERANCE WORK
Devon port.—A meeting of the Devonport Women's Christian lemperance Union was hold on Wednesday afternoon at the residence of Mrs. L. Blackwood, Mrs. Williams presiding. Delegates were appointed to the fortlieomjng district convention and Miss Pyle <rave a talk on Honolulu and the work being done among tho native races there. A letter was sent to Mr. A. Harris, M.P., asking him to support legislation giving effect to several proposals which dealt with the appointment of women police, affiliation and maintenance cases, tho unemployment tax in regard to women, pay for relief workers, and tho Contraceptives Bill. Miss Gladys Mallabond entertained the members with several pianoforte items. ; Kohimarama. - St. Heliors. Tho branch met last week, Mrs. Hugh Kasper presiding. A vote of sympathy was . passed to Mr. and Mrs. Warburton on tho death of their little daughter. Mrs. R. Bennett, J.P., gave an address on "Maori Women and Temperance." It was resolved that a letter bo sent to Mr. W. P. Endean, M.P., urging him to support several proposals, which arc to bo presented to Parliament and which were enumerated. Mrs. Lediard and Mrs. Hubbcr wero appointed delegates to the forthcoming district convention to bo held in September. The following remit is to be sent to the convention: —That the members of the W.C.T.U. urgo tho women of the churches to take a decided stand against women drinking in hotels. A vote of thanks to Mrs. Lewis Eady was passed for her hospitality.
