MORE POPULATION

NEED IN DOMINION LORD BLEDISLOE'S OPINION In the course of a speech in Christchurch the Governor-General, Lord BledisJoe, referred to what he had said in a previous address concerning an increase in the population of tho Dominion if the public services Avere not to prove too onerous a burden for its inhabitants. He had stated that any increase in population, if it came from the Old Country. must consist of assets and not liabilities. What he wanted to make perfectly clear, said Lord Bledisloe, was that in making such a reference the idea in his mind was that any such augmentation of the population should include potential employers as well as employees, who would help with capital, skill and experience in developing the still largely undeveloped resources of such richly endowed territory. He had in mind that the mineral resources of the South Island alone were considerable and were destined to provide increasing and, he believed, remunerative occupation for a largely increased population and good citizens in the days that lay ahead.
