ROOPE ROOSTER MATCHES RICHMOND BEATS DEVONPORT ! NEW TEAMS DEFEATED ( Tho first round of the Auckland : fßugby League's Roope Rooster knockout competition was played at Carl aw Park on Saturday under good condi- j tions, except that the grounds were on j tho heavy side. Four games were j played, Richmond, winners of the i senior championship, defeating Devon- j port in the principal fixture after a fast display.. The team play of Richmond proved the deciding factor and the winners were clearly superior in the second spell. The two new teams, Mount Albert and Papakura, suffered defeat at the hands of Ponsonby and Marist respectively. In the Ponsonby-Mount Albert fixture the score was even at the call of time and two extra spells of five minutes were necessary, Ponsonby adding eight points to its total during this period. Marist had a narrow win over Papakura, while City showed a return to form by taking the honours from Newton. Tho results were as follows: — Richmond, 26; Devonport, 5. City, 14; Newton, 9. Ponsonby, 19; Mount Albert, 11. Marist, 6; Papakura, 3.
