RELATIONS AFFECTED
BRITAIN AND AUSTRALIA TRADE CONTROVERSIES RATIONAL POLICY URGED By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received August 16. 6.35 p.m.) LONDON, August 16 The Morning Post, in an editorial article, says it is, regrettable that the relations between Britain and Australia have been steadily deteriorating in recent months. Neither side can be absolved from a share of the responsibility. The writer reviews briefly the meat and cotton controversies and says: "The truth is that both countries are trying to eat their cake and have it. The realistic solution surely is that we must sacrifice some of our foreign markets for the sake of Australia's imports and Australia must sacrifice some of her secondary industries for the sake of British imports. " The two parties should come together and devise a rational policy of harmony in their common interests."
REPLY TO CRITICISM DUTIES ON COTTON AUSTRALIA'S POSITION (Received August 17, 12.35 a.m.) MELBOURNE. August 16 Replying to English criticism of the Commonwealth Government's imposition of increased duties on British cotton piece goods and related cotton yarn the Minister of Customs, Mr. T. W. White, denied that Australia was not observing her Ottawa undertakings. Ho said the Government here had merely acted on the Tariff Board's recommendations. The cotton industry in the United Kingdom evidently failed to appreciate that the range of cotton goods on which protection had been accorded to Australian industry represented a very small proportion of Australia's requirements of cotton goods. British interests also had lost sight of the fact that valuable primage concessions were granted in the last Budget to British manufacturers.
