VICTORIA LEAGUE

LARGE AT HOME HELD AN INTERESTING PROGRAMME A largely-attended At Homo was held by the Victoria League in the Lj'ceum Club last evening. The guests, who included members and visitors, were received by Miss Mowbray, president of the league, who wore a frock of black ring velvet with ruffles of fine cream lace. , A resume of the league's activities was given in her address of welcome by Miss Mowbray, who appealed to members to give their support to the life members' fund, which needed only £BO to complete the £IOOO which was their objective. She also asked for support in the forthcoming Daffodil Day.

A programme arranged by Miss Kent, was presented. It included the following items:• —Song, " All on a Summer's Day," written by Mr. Beth, of Wanganui, and sung by Miss Nancy 6 Hanna; duet, "Kingfisher Blue" (Amy Woodford Finden), by Miss Nancye Hanna and Mr. 11. Simmers.

Two short plays were presented. The first, " Emily'B Excuse," which was performed by the" Victoria League Reading Club at the Festival Drama, portrayed an incident in the life of a servant girl in a second-class boarding house, who was tyrannised over by the proprietress. The parts were taken by Mrs. Usher, Miss Mary Pilkington, Miss W. Kent and Mrs. Clark. The second play, " The Bear," by Chekov, while preserving its Russian characteristics, had a surprising and refreshing lightness. The parts were cleverly taken by Mrs. Mays, Mr. Dennis Johns and Mr. Hogwood. A conjuring turn, given by Mr. Allen Mathews added to the enjoyment of the evening. Supper was served by the Parnell and city members, the following being hostesses: —Mrs. J. B. Macfarlane, Mrs. A. Edger, Mrs. L. S. Rickerby, Miss Fenton, Miss Slater (members of the executive), Mrs. H. Bloomlield, Mrs, J, S. Brigham, Mrs. A. Devore, Mrs. H. Gulliver, Mrs. Napier, Mrs. C. V. Houghton, Mrs. P. A. Lindsay, Mrs. W. Leatham, Mrs. S. A. Stride, the Misses F. and C. Murray, Miss D. Slater, Miss Rennell, Miss Isaacs.
