WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
Group Meeting.—The second group meeting, comprising eight institutes in the group, was held in the Town Hall, Huntly, recently. There were 300 ladies' present, and this number included members of the following institutes: —Huntly, Pukemiro, Ohmewai, Waiterimu, Waerenga, Rangiriri, Te Hoe and Te Kauwlnita. The president, Mrs. T. Chisholm, presided. Madame Milne (Auckland) gave a lecture on "Child Psychology,'' after which the Huntly ladies entertained tho gathering at lunch. In the afternoon the Mayor, Mr. W. C. E. George, made a speech of welcome. Mrs. Chisholm apologised for the absence of Mrs. Robson, Waikato federation president, and Mrs. Marx, treasurer, spoke on her behalf. A song was rendered by Mrs. Auld, and a competition, "The Best Mixer" was won by Miss H. Waterhouse, Te Kauwhata. A pianoforte solo was played by Mrs. P. Reston, Rangiriri. A'thrift table for competition was exhibited by each of the institutes, comprising eight articles. The winners were: —Huntly 1, Rangiriri 2, Ohinewai 3. Mrs. McGaughran, Ohinewai, spoke on behalf of 'members of surrounding districts and thanked the Huntly members for a most enjoyable day. Albany.—A competition for a knitted square was won by Mrs. Brown. Squares are to be made into a quilt to be donated to a poor family in the district. Birthday greetings were given to several members and a game "musical parcels" was won by Mrs. Billingham. Aranga.— A debate on the question, "Should Women Smoke" was won by Mrs. Sproule and Mrs. Pryee, who took the negative side. Miss M. Hemmins and Miss M. Thomas took tho affirmative. Tho competition for a fancy coat hanger was won by Miss E. Pratt, and for the best arranged vase of flowers by Miss L. Carloon. . Awanui. —The local Maori instituto members were entertained with games, vocal items and a wool-winding'com-petition. Mrs. Bridgford won the competition for an article made from one skein of wool, with a knitted cover for a hot water bag, and the competition lor something made from the inner tubing of a tyre was won by Mrs. Viskovich with a shopping bag. Coromandel. —A lecture on Egypt by .Mr. Cook was enjoyed. Winners in the home-made bread competition were:— Mrs. Maedonald,l, and Mrs. J. Clark, 2. East Tamaki. —A competition for the best artielo made from a kerosene tin was won by Mrs. Preston. The roll call was "favourite film stars." Glenbrook. —An appeal was made for groceries and padded squares for charity which was well responded to. Mrs. Hudson won the competition for pastry, M iss Robinson demonstrated beaten copper work, and Mrs. Hull spoke on gardening.
