WARLIKE PACIFISTS

Sir,—Side by side in the Herald of August 6 there wore two striking reports. One was a moderate appeal for freedom of speech, and the other was an astonishing example of it. If people really are seriously thinking such things it is far better to bring them out into the open, rather than dangerously drive them underground. The speakers at the "Opposition to War" meeting were apparently in no way opposed to war itself, but only to war with a possible foreign enemy. No objection was made to Russia's great preparations for national defence. That was a brjlliant and original suggestion of Mr. Chappie's, to make New Zealand a 'Free Republic," and thus rid ourselves of the tyranny of those northern barbarians! Scutum.
