GARDENING CONTESTS
CHILDREN'S SMALL INTEREST COMPLAINT IN WAIKATO [VROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] HAMILTON. Tuesday "I do not know what system of agricultural training is taught in the Waikato, but I think it is the worst in New Zealand," said Mr. "A. M. Bisley at a meeting of the executive of the Waikato Winter Show Association today. He said that in Taranaki the keenest interest was taken by young people in gardening and in agricultural competitions, whereas in the Waikato, notwithstanding the inducement offered by the association, little interest was taken an the sections provided for young people at the show. Mr. W. 11. .Roberts said he considered better prizes and more classes for juveniles should be provided. fte offered to donate £2 toward additional prize-money, Mr. F. A. Snell said he thought it was a mistake to devote too much prize-money to such classes. The children should Jjo induced by the honour attaching to success to enter the competitions. The secretary, Mr. W. H. Paul, suggested that seed firms should be invited tb offer the seed and manure for juvenile competitions. A special committee consisting of Messrs. W. K. Clark; W. R. Roberts, A. M. Bisley and the secretary was appointed to improve the schedule with a view to reviving interest among children in gardening. It was decided to include a class for produce grown in school gardens, and another for boys under 14. A resolution was passed approving the payment of full prize-money in all agricultural glasses independent of the number of entries.
