HARBOUR BRIDGE SCHEME

PROPOSED CONFERENCE NORTHCOTE COUNCIL'S VIEWS The proposed conference to be convened by the Mayor of Auckland, at the request of the Mayor of Birkenhead, Mr. G. Mills, to inquire into the prospect of the Auckland Harbour Bridge Company arranging finance for .the construction of the harbour bridge, was referred to at the meeting of the Northcote Borough Council last evening. . On the motion of Mr. N. S. Davidson, seconded by Mr. C. J. W. Taylor, it was resolved that, before any decision was made by the conference regarding some alternative scheme to the present one of financing the project, it was necessary that as much information as possiblo be obtained from the Government and the High Commissioner as to their attitude toward the present scheme, and the reason for the British Treasury refusing sanction to the harbour bridge loan. A copy of the resolution is to be sent to Mr. A. Harris, M.P., asking him to request the Ministers concerned to obtain the information and communicate direct- with the Northcote Council.. . .. ... It was also considered necessary that the Local Government Loans Board's attitude toward the suggestion of forming a special rating area, and striking a rate- as security, be ascertained, as the Royal Commission of 1930 reported strongly against this suggestion. .. . . . ,
