GREAT SOUTH KOAD CAES DESIRE FOR PARNELL ROUTE TRIAL NEWMARKET RUN A request that some of the cars ori the Great South Road service should bo diverted over the Parnell route was made to the Auckland Transport Board yesterday in a petition signed by a number of residents and shopkeepers of Green Lane and vicinity. Great South Road trams at present travel via Kliyber Pass and Anznc Avenue.
It was stated that many passengers desired to reach various stops between Newmarket and the city, or to reach the railway station, and great inconvenience was caused by the present unvaried service. It was suggested that if some of the Great South Road trams followed the Parnell route an increase in revenue would probably follow, and the running schedule would not be seriously dislocated. The question was referred to the board-in-committee. ,
In a report on the request for an extra service of cars between 9.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. on Mondays to Fridays on the city-Newmarket, city-Ponsonby and city-Symonds Street routes, the manager, Mr. A. E. Ford, said he was unable to see how the services could earn a satisfactory revenue, as the passengers carried on the cars would, to a great extent, be derived from the regular service trams. The average monthly cost on the .three routes would bo £169, £153 and £B7 respectively. It was decided, however, to give the city-Newmarket extended service a trial, the results to be reviewed after a month's operation. A tender of £B9 for the erection of roof and seating for two shelters, one at the Old Stone Jug and the other at Western Springs, was accepted. The Auckland City Council, it was reported, had agreed to carry out .the stonework for the shelters,' using stone on the property, provided the board supplied the necessary woodwork. The City Council's reply to the board's suggestions concerning the Victoria Avenue tram tracks was referred to the board-in-committee. The council had written stating it was not prepared to forgo the rates charged on the line, and that when the tracks were put in proper order the road would be brought to an equivalent condition. Appreciation of the work carried out by the board in renewing the tracks in Karangahape Road was. expressed in a letter from the Karangahape Road Business Promotion Society. "There is still some worE to be done at junctions, but that is being left over in the meantime," said the chairman, Mr. J. A. C. Allum.
