NEW SCHOOL LIBRARY
THE TECHNICAL COLLEGE NUCLEUS OF 3000 BOOKS An important development of the facilities at the Seddon Memorial Technical College is the acquisition of a new library, which eventually will contain a complete and up-to-date section of technological works. The library at present comprises about 3000 books and is housed in a room affording accommodation for about 100 pupils. "A library of technological works is a necessary adjunct to a technical college,'' remarked Mr. G. J. Park, the principal, commenting on the new library yesterday. "Industrial knowledge is continually progressing and it is essential that students should keep in touch with latest developments. Few people engaged in industry have opportunity to travel, and a good library will do much to offset this disadvantage." Mr. Park paid a tribute to the assistance given in connection with the library by Mr. John Barr, the city librarian, who had given valuable advice regarding lay-out and management. Miss K. M. Irvine, the college librarian, would be trained at the Auckland Library. The library is controlled by a special sub-committee appointed by the college board of managers, which has authorised an annual grant of £2OO. It is hoped that assistance will be forthcoming from the Government, or, perhaps, the Carnegie Corporation, in the event of which consideration will be given to opening the technical section of the library to the public. The library would then become self-supporting from subscriptions. The library is used only for reference purposes at present, but it will be opened shortly as a lending library to college students for a nominal charge. a
