HAYDN'S "CREATION"
PRESENTATION IN AUCKLAND Haydn's groat oratorio, " Creation," last given in Auckland in 1932 by the Choral Society, is to be presented by associated Methodist Choirs, under the baton of Mr. Albert Bryant, in the Pitt Street Church, next Thursday evening. The soloists will be Cora Melvin (soprano), Mr. Roger Errington (tenor), and Mr. Frank Sutherland (bass). Tho oratorio will nt>t be given with orchestral, but with organ accompaniment, and Mr. Edgar liandal will be organist. . " Creation " has not the majesty and deep feeling of Handel's " Messiah," but it never fails to charm by its bright melody and sunny imagery. Some of the airs and choruses are among the most thrilling examples of vocal music ever written. " Now Vanish Before tho Holy Beams," " With Verdure Clad," " The Heavens are Tolling," and " Achieved is the Glorious Work," are perhaps tho best-known, but the whole score is full of musical interest. Although naive in some of his descriptive passages, " Papa " Haydn always possessed the gift of filling his work with charm and beauty.
