YORKSHIRE SCENES
BEAUTY OF THE DALES To anyone who knows the worth of England—even to those whose knowledge of this strangely lovely country is derived only from novelists who seek their settings in it —Miss Ella Pontefract's travel book of a remote Yorkshire dale will be a source of unending delight. She and her artist companion, Marie Hartley, have apparently tramped through this' little stretch of country so often that it has assumed for them something of a definite personality which now shines through the pages of the book. Swaledale is only one of hundreds of lovely dales which pattern the moors of Cumberland, Westmoreland and Yorkshire, but Miss I'ontefract is right when she claims that each one has a character of its own. She shows us Swaledale in changing moods, discourses with wit and understanding on the typical Worthcountry folk who people it and blends a knowledge of history with a genuine appreciation of landscape beauty. Miss Hartley's woodcuts and photographs give admirable support to the author's enthusiasm.
