FINE OF £l4O PAID
AUSTRALIAN IN AMERICA PERMIT OVERSTAYED To bo penalised to the extent of about £l4O for missing a steamer owing to a strike was the experience of Mr. M. Poison, trainer of the Australian racehorse Winooka, who passed through Auckland by the Monterey yesterday on his way back to Sydney from the United States.
Mr. Poison said ho had decided some time ago to ship Winooka back to Australia. He had only a temporary permit for residence in the United States and he wished to join the Mariposa on her last southward voyage a month ago. However, owing to the longshoremen's strike he was unable to risk transporting Winooka to Los Angeles and was forced to wait for the Monterey. Before his departure the United States immigration officials informed him that lie had overstayed, his permit and he had to pay a fine of 700 dollars.
"In view of the circumstances, I thought it was rather autocratic," Mr. Poison said. " I had to pay tho fine, but I lodged a complaint and I under-stand-1 have prospects of getting tho money back."
