TWO MEN STEAL COAL
TAKEN FROM RAILWAY YARDS RELIEF WORKERS FINED The theft- of coal from trucks in the railway yards at Mount Eden was admitted in the Police Court yesterday by Matthew Thomas Gilmour, aged 44, labourer, and Herbert Potter, aged 52. butcher. Gilmour pleaded guilty to the theft of a quantity valued at Is 3d, and Potter to a quantity valued at Is. Inspector Edwards said that as a result of frequent complaints concernins the theft of coal a constable had been detailed to watch the yards. At about 7.10 p.m. on Wednesday, he saw the two accused walking away each with a sack of coal on his back. Both gave their names openly, but asked the constable to give them a chance. They •were relief workers and nothing was known against them. The magistrate, Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., fined each accused £l, in default seven days' ■ imprisonment. Fourteen days were allowed in which to pay the fines.
