TWO NONAGENARIANS

BIRTHDAYS OCCUR TO-DAY 70 YEARS IN NEW ZEALAND Two Auckland nonagenarians will celebrate their birthdays to-day. They are Mr. James Joseph Cooper, of 59 Arthur Street, Onehunga, who will be 94, and Mr. John Banttury, of 111 Grafton Road, who will be 92. Both t have spent 70 years in New Zealand and retain vivid memories of the pioneering days. Mr. Cooper was born at Cromer, Norfolk, and went to sea at the of 13. He arrived in New Zealand fa 1864 and took part in the Otago gold rush. In 1873 he came to Auckland and took up land in tho Pakuranga district, which he farmed for 30 year 3. On thfl death of his wife 30 years ago he settled at Onehunga, where he resides with his daughter, Mrs. G. Vazey. Mr. Banbury, who is a veteran of the Maori War, was born at Burford, Oxfordshire, and sailed for New Zealand in November, 1861. He joined the rush to the Coromandel goldtield and later took part as a militiaman in skirmishes with the Waikato Maoris. He was awarded the Quean's Medal Returning to Auckland he became * commercial traveller. With the lata Mr. Samuel Rout he founded the Auckland Scripture Gift Association, of which he is still secretary.
