DOMINION'S POPULATION
TOWNS AND COUNTRY TOTALS IN MAIN CENTRES Although Now Zealand is mainly dependent on her primary industries there is a considerably greater number of persons living in urban areas and in large towns than in rural districts. According to the latest report from the Census and Statistics Office the estimated population of New Zealand on April 1 last was 1,548,909. Of this total 860,790 persons lived in cities or towns with a population in excess of 4000 and the remaining 688,119 lived in small towns and rural districts. A year earlier the population of the Dominion was estimated at 1,536,964, or 11,945 less than on April 1 last. These figures do not include the populations of Western Samoa and other Island dependencies of New Zealand; There were 27 towns with a population in excess of 4000 on April 1 last. The following was the population of the main centres, the figures for April 1, 1933, being given in parentheses: —Auckland, 221,300 (21U.800); Wellington, 146,800 (115,900); Christchurch, 131,100 (130,100); Dunedin. 88,500 (87,900); Wanganui, 27,650 (27,650); Invercargill, 24,800 (24,500); Palmerston North, 23,550 (23,500); Napier, 19,550 (19,450); New Plymouth, 18,950 (18,750); Timaru, 18,950 (18,750); Hamilton, 18,550 (18,3Q0); Hastings, 17,200 (17,000); Gisborne, 16,650 (16.500); Nelson, 13,000 (12,850).
