If INCREASE IN GRANTS |t - '■ -• " r ••••♦» • •• • • jp HIGH school for kawakawa Advice was received from the Education Department at a meeting of the Auckland Education Board yesterday that approval bad; been given to a grant of a further £4OOO for school committees' capitation for the current year, in addition to' the present supplementary grant of £3OOO, and also to an increase of £3OOO in the grant for maintenance of school buildings. It was further advised that it had been decided to reinstate the payment of five shillings a week for board for each child over six years of age who, through remoteness of a uchool, had to livp away from home in order to attend, subject .to certain provisions.

The chairman, Mr. T. U. Wells, pointed out' that the additional grants were»to be divided among the various boards throughout New Zealand. At the same time, he said, the items, when considered together, rather inspired one with the impression . thfit the position financially was improving a little. He also referred to the reported increase in the salaries of rationed teachers, and it was decided to write to the Education Department expressing appreciation of the action taken. Advice was received from the Education Department that approval had been given to the establishment of a District High School at Kawakawa from February 1, 1935. It was decided to request that in view of the numbers already attending the post-primary courses at Kawakawa, the High School be established as from the beginning of next term.

The organiser of educational broadcasts to schools advised that the number of schools equipped with radio apparatus had increased from 98 to 140 since the last report.
