WORK OR SUSTENANCE PROBLEM IN WELLINGTON [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON. Wednesday Of the sum of £IB,OOO provided by the Wellington City Council the employment of 2500 men under No. 5 scheme during the current financial year, no less than £10,600 has been spent in the first three months, and at the present rate of expenditure the whole amount will be exhausted with only half the year gone. To discuss the position a special meeting of the council was held yesterday afternoon. The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, suggested that all men employed should be circularised at once to find out how many were prepared to accept sustenance instead of relief pay. He said 'he had informed the Unemployment Board of the position.
The general opinion of councillors was that nothing should be done until the Mayor had discussed the problem with the Minister of Employment. He ■will then report to a meeting of the council.
