AUCKLAND RETAINS SHIELD DEFEAT OF WAIKATO TEAM POOR GROUND CONDITIONS Auckland again successfully defended the New Zealand Hockey Challenge Shield on Saturday, when it defeated Waikato by 5 goals to 2 in a hard and interesting match. This was the sixth time that Auckland has defended the trophy sinco winning it from Canterbury in 1931. The grounds at Remuera were very soft, as the recovery they had made sinco Country Week was offset by heavy rain overnight. By the end of tho game tho field had cut up very badly. The first half was evenly contested, and during tho first few minutes Waikato mado tho attack, but once both sides settled down neither gained any great advantage until Auckland notched a goal toward tho end of tho spell. A few minutes later Waikato evened the score with a goal from a penalty bully, but after this Auckland was superior, duo in part to the good work by tho Auckland dcfonco and to i the fact that tho visiting forwards I seemed more disconcerted by the slip- | pery conditions than tho homo lino. Passing between Forster and Roughton put Waikato on attack, but at the critical moment the light wing was beaten by the slippery groiind. From tho corner Roughton's shot was deflected. A scuffle in tho Auckland circle looked promising, but the homo side cleared. A series of Waikato attacks followed, Robertson effecting a save from, a corner. Auckland worked down the right and eventually reached the circle, Chapman swinging in a stinging shot from a, hard angle to score. Score Equalised From a roll-in near tho Auckland twentyfive Chapman secured, and in a passing bout with Floyd took the ball to ther other end. A free-hit enabled Floyd to advance, but he over-ran the ball and Smillio cleared. The ball went straight to the other end of the field and tho Waikato forwards crowded into the circle. Smillie kicked out, but Floyd collected and scored with a hard shot. B. Spierß made a determined rush, Wattam kicking clear, and play worked to the other end. Watts shot and Smillie stopped, but Floyd rushed in, collected tho ball off his puds and pushed it into the net. Auckland, 3; Waikato, 1. Waikato went straight for the circle and Houghton raised tho ball over_ the bar. Auckland broke away for a brief period, but Waikato returned with a fine run by Forster, which was stopped by F. Clark. A free-hit sent Auckland away and Floyd imade a fine solo run down the field. Smillie ran out and stopped him, but failed to 'clear, and Floyd dodged round and netted. Auckland, 4; Waikato, 1. Waikato's Second Goal Brisk exchanges ended In Waikato making ground on the left, and a fr®e-hit almost on tho Auckland line led to exciting momenta in the circle, but tho ball was cleared. The Auckland forwards went away again and pressed round the goal. Chapman Bending across a fine centre which went begging, and play moved to the opposite end. From a roll-in near tho lino B. Spiers secured a cross-hit and scored. Auckland, 4; Waikato, 2. Powdrill collected a nice cross-shot from Brough, and after a good run down the left centred to Roughton, who knocked on. Waikato made a rush and reached the circle, but Wattam was safe, and Wellbourne went away, centring to Floyd, whoso shot was stopped by Smillie. Williams were umpires. VISITORS ENTERTAINED The visiting Waikato team waa entertained by the Auckland Hockey Association at a dinner at tho Hotel Auckland on Saturday evening after the match. Mr. L. C. Norton, president of the association, presided. The need for a revision of boundaries, in the Waikato district was Btressed by several speakers, Mr. T. Ewen, captain of the visiting team, stating that Waikato could not maintain the status of a major association unless some expansion was made. The district was very scattered and consisted largely of farming country. Among the toasts honoured wero: "Tho Waikato Association and team," proposed by Mr. C. Watts, captain of tho Auckland Bido, and responded to by Mr. T. Ewen; "The Auckland Hockey Association," proposed by Mr. F. V. C. Grac.ie, manager of tho Waikato team, and responded to by Mr. J. N. Wilson and Dr. H. 'Lawry; "Tho Umpires." proposed by Mr. C. Radcliffe and responded to by Mr. E. <T. newitt and Mr. A. Williams. LOWER GRADE RESULTS Special Match. Tho somewhat heavy ground slightly favoured tho home team, which had a little the belter of the game. However, tho match was fairly evenly contested, and the issuo remained iin <loubt until tho end. Rodney's bustling forward line, ably led by T. Grimmer, tho captain and his brother, proved too strong for tho visiting backs, and broke through repeatedly. Tho ilnal score was:— Rodney, 7; Auckland B, 5. After tho match the visiting team was entertained at a dinner at Warkworth.
