RELIABILITY TRIAL

PASCOE CUP CONTEST motor-cyclists' event DISTANCE OF 250 MILES One of tlio chief events of the motorCycling year, thd Pnscoe Cup reliability trial, was held over the week-end under tho auspices of tlio Auckland MotorCycle Club. Stormy weather made tlio tost more exacting than it usually is and road conditions eventually caused tho elimination of one portion of tho course, the section between Now Brighton and Orcro Point. Competitors found that a slip had completely blocked tlio road some miles south of Matingarahi, and it was necessary to return to New Brighton and proceed via Pokeno back to Auckland. By the elimination of this section, which would have contained many important riding tests, tho trial lost some of its interest, but it was otherwise a successful outing. Results will not bo known until all tho checks have been compared. Twelve contestants, including several well-known riders, left the Auckland railway station at 2 p.m. on Saturday and travelled via the waterfront v road to St. Heliers Bay, and then through Panmure, Otahuliu, Papnkura and Pukekohe to Pokeno, travelling over tho Razorback Hills, an observed section! The main road was followed to Ngaruawahia, and the route then led over the river road to Hamilton, whore the main road was rejoined and followed to Cambridge. The night was spent in Cambridge. A special starting test preceded yesterday's trial route, which passed through Matamat.i, Te Aroha, Paeroa, Ngatea and Waitakarurti to Miranda and New Brighton. Tho intention had been to proceed via Matingarahi and Kawakawa Bay and Clevedon to rejoin the main road at Papakura. Contestants negotiated successfully several deep water splashes and clay sections after leaving New Brighton, but before Matingarahi was reached an impassable slip was encountered and the riders had to return to Auckland via Pokeno. The total disstance .covered by tho trial was approximately 250 miles. Contestants were as follows:—-M. Robinson (3J h.p. Royal Enfield sidecar outfit), A. McLaren (Indian Scout side-car outfit), A. Sutherland (2J b.p. B.S A.), P. Fletcher (2k h.p. A.J.S.), L. Perry (2J h.p. A.J.S.), J. Lamont (7 9 h.p. Roval Enfield side-car outfit) J. Dunlop (23 h.p. Velocette), G. Higo-s (3£ h.p. A.J.S.), H. S. White (2J h.p. 8.5.A.), G. Howlett (22 h.p. Velocette), L. Tapp (2£ h.p. Royal Enfield), J. Stewart (7.9 h.p. HarlevDavidson side-car outfit). Tamont withdrew from the contest early on Saturday afternoon, and White and Fletcher did not proceed past Miranda, on the Ne\f Brighton road. Checks were taken en route by W. Marett, S. Fletcher and H. W. Youren.
