Mr. V. J. Larner returned to Auckland by train yesterday morning. Sir James and Lady Gunson returned by train from Palmerston North yesterday morning. Dr. J. Thorns, D.5.0., M.C., late New Zealand Staff Corps, who has been Commandant of the Shanghai Volunteer Force for the last three years, was awarded a C.B.E. in the King's Birthday Honours, recently gazetted. L'eutenantColonel Thorns has now retired and is living in Kent. Mr. Geoffrey Denniston, formerly of Christ's College, and now resident in Adelaide, has been appointed to the staff of Wanganui Collegiate School, and with Mrs. Denniston and their children, is expected to arrive .in New Zealand by the Wanganella on September 12. Mrs. Denniston is a daughter of Sir Francis and Lady Bell,- Wellington. Lieutenant-Colonel K. M. Tennant, M.M., has relinquished the command of the North Auckland Mounted Rifles, and has been transferred to the reserve of officers. Major W. R. Lang, M.C., has been appointed to command the regiment, with the rank of lieuten-ant-colonel. Captain W. W. Horwell, M.M., reserve of officers, has been appointed to the Ist Battalion, Auckland Regiment. ? Mr. O. J. Wright, chief p<t tmaster at Invercargill, is about to retire from the Post and Telegraph Department, and ceases active duty to-day, Mr. Wright joined the department as a message boy at Otakj on September 1, 1893, and since that time has been employed at various periods at most of the important offices in the Dominion.
