NEW TEAROOMS

OYER £20,000 INVOLVED ON TOP OF CITY BUILDING REPLACING IYA RADIO MASTS One of Auckland's prominent landmarks', the wireless masts of IYA on the roof of the building of George Court and Sons, Limited, in Karangahape Road, will shortly be demolished, to bo replaced by largo modem tearooms being erected at a cost of over £20,000. Tho architect, Mr. Frederick A. Browne, has planned a building from which Auckland and its environs will be seen from a new angle, in tho comfort of one of the Dominion's most modern restaurants. The addition consists of a complete building on the roof of tho present structure, fitting from corner to corner inside the space between tho wireless masts. Lifts are available to convey patrons to a large waiting room, from which a broad flight of stairs leads to the tearoom. This is of very ample dimensions, well glassed on tho three sides with an aspect to the sun. Two wings lead off the main hall, breaking up the large expanse of floor. Cubicles line the walls and two alcoves flank a door leading on the city side to what will be a pleasant roof garden with a substantia] parapet. Tlio view, both from the tearoom and the surrounding roof, should make a strong appeal. Except for a small break caused by the buildings at the top of Khyber Pass Road, and the Auckland Hospital, there is a complete panorama of the country round Auckland. The hills beyond the Manukau and the full sweep of the Waitakeres fill tho western outlook. Auckland Harbour is spread out beyond the lower part of tho city, and magnificent views of tho Hauraki Gulf and its islands complete the picture to the north and cast. Although the interior decoration has just been commenced, enough has been done to give some idea of the pleasing finish that will result. There is low panelling along the walls and art plaster above, the ceilings being finely moulded. The floors will bo of hardwood and special attention will b«> given to the lighting effects. The kitchens and servery will be in keeping with the rest of the building, and will contain the latest electrical devices making, for quick and hygienic service. Special departments will deal with the cooking of different types of food, and large hot water boilers will be housed in a special wing. When completed some time in October, there will be ample accommodation for 350 people in the main tearoom, while a smaller reception hall will be available for private parties. The contractor is Mr. A. J. Good.
