SYDNEY'S DENSE FOG
SHIPPING HAMPERED DISLOCATION OF TRAFFIC SYDNEY. July 17 The heaviest fog for years descender! upon Sydney and tho suburbs before midnight yesterday and disorganised street-and harbour traffic. The Lane Cove ferry steamer Lady Scott ran aground, but was refloated two hours later. Other ferry services ceased running with the result that the North Shore tram traffic was overburdened. The steamer Mamma, from Wellington, arrived off the heads about 6.30 a.m. to-day, but could not enter the harbour owing to the fog. Three coastal vessels were held up inside the heads, and outside several vessels waited throughout the night to enter.
The South Head signalman, for the first time on record, could not see the 1,250,000-candle power Macquarie light, 350 yards away. He said it was the thickest fog in his experience.
