STRAINED RELATIONS
ITALY ANT) ABYSSINIA SERIOUS TRADE DISPUTE WARLIKE PREPARATIONS JAPANESE COMPETITION By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright LONDON. July 4 The Rome correspondent of the News Chronicle says relations between Italy and Abyssinia are strained almost to breaking point. This is due to Abyssinia's refusal to abide by the terms of the convention under which Italy was granted the same economic and commercial concessions as other nations.
The objection of Italy concerns principally Japan, which recently has acquired a vast cotton-growing concession. The situation is further complicated by Abyssinia's demand for promised trading facilities through the port of Assab, on the Red Sea, in the Italian possession of Eritrea. Warlike preparations are being made. Warrior tribesmen are in training, and are being equipped by business men from Abyssinia. The Italian Prime Minister, Signor Mussolini, has frequently declared that tho Japanese menace to Italian tiade in Abyssinia will he fiercely resisted.
