GENERAL ELECTION

FRESH MANDATE WANTED GOVERNMENT'S PLATFORM (Received July 5, 6.35 p.m.) CANBERRA. July 6 The Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, explained in the House of Representatives to-day that the Federal general election on September 15 would be held only two or three months earlier than was necessary. The Government had completed its work of balancing the Budget and restoring confidence and the country's credit and now it desired to face the problems of rural rehabilitation, finding markets for produce, completing trade treaties, dealing with restrictions on products, Empire co-operation and continuing a policy of sound finance. These masters, on which the Government had a definite policy, required to be submitted to the people. Hence, in seeking a further mandate, the Government would have a wonderful story to tell the people in the course of the coming campaign.
