NORTHERN CONFERENCE MANY SUBJECTS DISCUSSED COSTS OF TELEPHONES [bt telegraph—OWN correspondent] KAIKOHE. Thursday The third annual conference of the North Auckland Chambers of Commerce was held in Kaikohe to-day. There was a representative attendance of delegates. Mr. H. F. Guy, president of the Kaikohe Chamber, was elected chairman, and Mr. W. C. Wylie, secretary of the conference. Before tho business of the conference commenced the delegates were welcomed to Kaikoho by the Town Board chairman, Mr. T. Guerin. A wide range of subjects was discussed. The following remits were carried: — That the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand be asked to press for a reversion, after a, trial of six months, to tho scale of telegraphic charges operating until the recent alterations, Unemployment Taxation That representations be made to tho Government to give relief to married men in respect of an allowance for wife and children in the matter of unemployment taxation similar to those given under tho income tax. The conference endorsed the principle of graduated unemployment taxation. That in the opinion of this conference monetary reform is of outstanding importance; tho arrest of progressive depletion is, in its view, the condition precedent to a restoration of world prosperity and n° other measures which may be taken can prove effective substitutes.

That the Native Department, bo urged to hasten the completion of the native consolidation scheme in North Auckland. Delegates stated that the consolidation scheme should be hastened bo that natives could bo settled on their lands and so bo self-supporting. That the Government be urged that every school child in New Zealand should be supplied with free milk. Mails lor the South That the conference impress upon tho Government the necessity of an immediate reduction of telephone rentals and wireless licences; also the necessity for consolidation of small country exchanges, with a view to reducing subscribers' costs. That this conference condemns the manner in which unemployment funds have been utilised for the employment of men on private land and works and is of opinion that public works should receive preference as to subsidies to be paid in this manner. That the Post and Telegraph Department be urged to have a mail van attached to the northern express between Whangarei and Auckland so that mails from North Auckland for all destinations south of Auckland can be sorted on that train. It was pointed out that letters from the North for the places between Auckland and Wellington were held in Auckland for a day. That this conference impresses upon the Forestry Department the fact that there are extensive areas in North Auckland eminently suitable for afforestation on a largo scale. Health Among Maoris

That owing to the scattered nature of the Maori population in North Auckland the Government be urged to make provision for instructing the Maori people in the genaral principles of health preservation. It is suggested that native girls of good educational standing bo admitted as pupils to local country hospitals, the girls after training and examination to act as assistants to the native district nurses in their own localities. That strong representations bo made to the Government for the early completion of the gap (2£- miles) between Waikare and the Russell-AVhangam Road, which would afford direct access from Russell to the Far North and a direct road for settlers to the freezing works. The executive was instructed to collect data in connection with an electric scheme for the North.
